Kirk Nieuwenhuis went 3-for-38 in 27 games for the Mets before the club designated him for assignment on May 18.
He was traded to the Angels for cash about a week later. He went 3-for-22 in ten games for Los Angeles before being designated for assignment earlier this week.
It would appear Nieuwnehuis is back with the Mets again.
The club claimed Nieuwenhuis off waivers from the Angels.
To make room for Nieuwenhuis on the 40-man roster, the Mets transferred Jerry Blevins to the 60-day disabled list.
The Mets could attempt to waive Nieuwenhuis and make him a minor leaguer once Ruben Tejada or Dillon Gee return from leave. Presumably he would pass through at this point.
There really is no reason for him to stay beyond that point, and Las Vegas could really use the depth. On the other hand, they’ve operated this roster in mysterious ways lately, so time will tell.
In any event, the Mets have to accommodate Nieuwenhuis on the active roster – the team has not announced a corresponding move for that yet.
Perhaps this will mark the end of the Mets carrying three catchers and they will spend the option on Kevin Plawecki, but Tejada has to return tomorrow too, which means Nieuwenhuis might never even get a chance to put on the uniform.
