Earlier this week the Mets reverted back to a 5-man rotation and inserted Dillon Gee into the bullpen. This was not even a full turn through their newly formed 6-man rotation, mind you.
On Thursday, Sandy Alderson told reporters the team could potentially use a “6-man lite” rotation or a “5-man heavy” rotation. Well it looks like the Mets will be using that aforementioned 6-man lite rotation as the back-and-forth continued today with them listing Gee as this Sunday’s starter against the Braves.
Bartolo Colon pitches tonight, with Jacob deGrom pitching on regular rest tomorrow, Gee slotted in on Sunday, pushing Noah Syndergaard to Monday, Matt Harvey to Tuesday and Jon Niese to Wednesday, all pitching with an extra day’s rest.
With Harvey struggling the way he has lately, I wonder if this could be a way for the Mets to give him an extra day of rest and more time to work with pitching coach Dan Warthen over the next week.
It just seems to me that there has been a lot of indecisiveness in regards to the starting rotation over the last few weeks. They’ve gone from the standard 5-man rotation, to a 6-man, only to revert to the 5-man halfway through, and now they’re going to a “6-man lite” rotation. This situation has really created a level of awkwardness and uncertainty for the pitching staff and doesn’t offer a set routine from one turn to the next.
