With the Mets offense continuing to scuffle as the season rolls on, the need to add offense to the roster continues to mount.

Sandy Alderson has said for weeks they are exploring ways to augment the roster from outside the organization, but on Thursday afternoon at Citi Field, he couldn’t offer anything resembling a solution to their problem, suggesting the markets still have not opened up to this point int he season.

“I’d say it’s a very narrow market,” Alderson said before Thursday’s game. “Teams are not looking to dump their players in the middle of June. That’s like advertising to their fans that the season is over.

“I don’t care how bad your record is, teams are reluctant to do that at this point in the season,” Alderson continued. “As you get closer to the trade deadline, fans and media develop more of an expectation that teams are going to move players. But right now it’s a little early. And, as I said, the market is pretty narrow.”

Alderson thinks the offense has been better lately despite being no-hit on Tuesday.

“If you look at all the games around the no-hitter, last night and the several games before that, I think we were in double-digit hits most of those games,” Alderson explained. “Stuff can happen. On the one hand, you could look at it and say, ‘Well, that’s a punctuation mark for some of the problems that we’ve been having.’ But, at the same time, I don’t think it accurately reflects the way we’ve been hitting the last six or seven days.

The Mets have averaged 3.3 runs scored per game over their last seven games, while averaging just under nine hits in those games.

Alderson discounted the significance of Giants RHP Chris Heston no-hitting the Mets on Tuesday night.

“No-hitters are always aberrations,” He explained. “We no-hit the Cardinals a couple of years ago. I’m not sure where they ended up, but my guess is it wasn’t in the second division.”

Alderson insisted the club could take on additional salary in a trade, but noted the players who are currently available are underperforming at the present time.

  1. I’m old enough to know when the BS is flowing…and also old enough to remember that PIAZZA was traded ( twice!) in the month of MAY….trades happen when clubs make them happen as a priority to play competitively for the remainder of the season, no matter what month of the season you are in. Do something!
