Mets activate Dilson Herrera, Bobby Parnell from the disabled list

Dilson Herrera Bobby Parnell

BaronThe Mets are getting two more players back from the disabled list on Thursday.

The club announced the Mets have activated both Dilson Herrera and Bobby Parnell from the disabled list, and will be available for Thursday night’s game.

To make room for Herrera on the roster, the Mets placed Ruben Tejada on the Paternity Leave List.

To make room for Parnell, the Mets placed Dillon Gee on the bereavement list.

First off, condolences to Gee on the loss of his grandmother, and congratulations to Tejada who was expecting the newcomer either this week or next week. Tejada and Smarlyn Ochoa celebrated the birth of a baby girl this morning.

As for what’s next, this buys the Mets a couple of days before they have to make more drastic moves to the roster.

Terry Collins said late Wednesday they would restore a reserve infielder to the bench when Herrera gets here. They still don’t have that now that Tejada is out temporarily, but presumably he will be that guy when he gets back. So, the move to accomodate Tejada should be easy – they can simply decide whether Kevin Plawecki will be optioned to Triple-A or go on the big league disabled list.

As for Gee, if he isn’t traded, he will presumably replace either Jack Leathersich or maybe someone like Hansel Robles in the bullpen.

As for Plawecki, he is the third technically active catcher on the roster, but it’s still not clear if he’s available tonight. If he isn’t the Mets will be playing a man short again and without much flexibility on the bench. Anthony Recker could conceivably be an emergency infielder, but that would expose them if something happens to d’Arnaud.

That along with not having a reserve infielder is just not an ideal roster to be playing with.

Gee can be on the bereavement list for 3-7 days. Tejada can be on the paternity list for 1-3 days.
