The Mets will be getting another reinforcement back from the disabled list on Thursday.
The club announced Dilson Herrera will be activated before Thursday’s game against the Giants.
This move also fortified their middle infield depth on the bench, as they currently do not have one on the roster.
It’s a bizarre play by the club.
Las Vegas was off yesterday, and they chose to play short after demoting Daniel Muno to Triple-A instead of Kevin Plawecki before Wednesday’s loss.
In the end, they gained nothing by holding Herrera out, and potentially handicapped themselves in the process.
It’s possible they’re bringing Herrera back in advance of the move Terry Collins was referring to in his pre-game press conference on Wednesday. He referenced Bobby Parnell in regards to that move, but things change quickly, and this might be a response to that, especially if they’re not ready to activate Parnell today.
It seems logical a reliever will be sent out for Herrera. Collins said on Thuraday they intend to fortify the bench with an infielder upon activating Herrera, meaning one of the extra left-handed relievers like Jack Leathersich or possibly Hansel Robles could be on the bubble.
Both could eventually be out anyway when the Mets restore Parnell to the roster, anyway.
At the same time, Herrera simply could be replacing Plawecki, who will either go to the disabled list or back to Las Vegas.
The club will announce a corresponding roster move before Thursday’s game.
Herrera has been on the disabled list since May 15 with a broken finger.
