Mets to play without a backup infielder until Dilson Herrera returns

The Mets have operated with an imbalanced active roster for much of the season.

They currently have three left-handed pitchers on the active roster, three catchers, six starting pitchers for a five man rotation, no backup infielders (they optioned Daniel Muno to Triple-A on Wednesday afternoon), and with Kevin Plawecki being unavailable, an effective three-man bench tonight.

And for now, the Mets will continue to play without a backup infielder. Terry Collins said on Wednesday night the club will not have such a backup until Dilson Herrera returns from the disabled list.

Herrera could very well be back on Friday, meaning they may be playing short for only one other game. But the Mets almost had to consider Anthony Recker at third base when Eric Campbell got hit in the head by Brandon Crawford tagging Crawford out at third base. That alone would have put the Mets in a really tough spot with Kevin Plawecki being unavailable tonight.

They already have people playing out of position everyday and people who should not be playing everyday to begin with – why back themselves into a corner with the roster? It’s just not clear why the Mets continue to handicap themselves on a daily basis.
