The Mets announced late Tuesday Bobby Parnell was joining the team on Wednesday, but were delaying his activation from the disabled list for a few days.
On Wednesday afternoon, manager Terry Collins said the team was, “waiting for something to occur” in the next few days.
Collins would not reveal the clubs plan ahead of activating Parnell, or if the plan included providing a roster spot for Parnell.
“If I share here, it will go to Congress,” Collins joked to reporters.
Unless somebody is hurt, suspended, or going on leave, there is nobody in that bullpen who truly deserves to be optioned or cut completely off the roster for Parnell. They’ve all performed extroardinarily well all things considered, and with Parnell still rebuilding from 2014 Tommy John Surgery, it would be difficult to justify swapping somewhat out no matter what.
The Mets could also have Parnell throw a side session to determine if he’s ready, or if he has to reboot his rehab and go back to work in Port St. Lucie. Considering what he’s struggling with, that may not be the worst idea in the world.
There is one square piece the Mets are trying to fit into a round hole, and that’s Dillon Gee in the bullpen. His debut in relief did not get off to a good start last night, he is unhappy and has already said in the past how difficult it was to adapt to the life of a reliever. So perhaps the Mets are endeavoring to find a solution to what really is a situation where they have six (and possible seven) starting pitchers for five spots in the rotation.
Again, that is total conjecture, but not implausible.
One response to “Bobby Parnell’s activation on hold, Mets, ‘waiting for something to occur’”
Sounds like a possible trade.
