Both Travis d’Arnaud and Dilson Herrera have been transferred to Triple-A Las Vegas to complete their rehab assignments, and Terry Collins said this weekend he hopes to have both of them back later this week.
With the Mets off on Monday, the club may only have to deal with their absences for just one more game.
Joel Sherman of the New York Post says barring any setbacks, the Mets expect both d’Arnaud and Herrera to be activated in time for their game on Wednesday against the Giants.
Assuming all goes well, it’s fairly certain Kevin Plawecki will be sent back to Triple-A after tomorrow’s game. He’s got to play everyday and continue honing his skills. He’s struggled at times during his first stint in the big leagues, but Terry Collins and the club have been very pleased with his first big league test. It’s not easy to come here and immediately produce – remember, d’Arnaud took nearly a year and a demotion to the minor leagues before he came into his own.
Plawecki will be back in the big leagues at some point, either as insurance to d’Arnaud again, or quite possibly elsewhere at some point down the road.
As for who Herrera replaces, it seems logical the Mets will just option Daniel Muno back to Las Vegas. That way Ruben Tejada could return to a role he will eventually be strongest, which is more of a utility-type player. The good news is, Tejada might not lose too many at-bats, as he has shown he can handle third base, he can spell Wilmer Flores, and of course if Herrera struggles, perhaps he could spend some time back at second base, as well.
