The Mets revolving door at third base continues to spin.
Daniel Murphy left Thursday’s game against the Diamondbacks in the second inning with tightness in his left quad.
Eric Campbell replaced Murphy at third base.
Murphy will have an MRI on Friday, after which it will be determined if he needs to go on the disabled list.
“We won’t know until tomorrow,” Terry Collins said about Murphy. “As they all do, immediately it was not good. After he had treatment, a little later he felt a little bit better. Tomorrow we’ll know more. We’ll have him looked at tomorrow and make a decision.”
Needless to say, losing one of their hottest hitters in an otherwise mostly uninspiring lineup is not what the Mets need at all. Hopefully this is a minor injury, but upper leg injuries are often difficult to predict.
This is a shortcoming of playing with the short bench. It makes it difficult to navigate injuries, give people full days off, and manage late innings.
If Murphy is out for an extended period, Perhaps the Mets might consider promoting Matt Reynolds and taking a look at what he can do in this scenario in the middle infield. They could always recall Daniel Muno and go with Campbell, but they already know what they have in both for that matter, which are not starting players at this level.
No matter what, the club is just about out of options to turn to in-house.
