Despite continuing to miss David Wright and Travis d’Arnaud, the Mets have started to show some life with their bats over the last week.
In their last eight games, the club is hitting .264/.329/.439 with 12 doubles, a triple, 11 home runs and 39 runs scored (4.9 runs per game).
Here are some individual highlights over the last few of weeks:
- Michael Cuddyer has an eight-game hitting streak after going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI on Tuesday night. He is hitting .387 with two home runs, three doubles and six RBI during his streak. In addition, he is hitting .351 with ten RBI over his last 15 games.
- Ruben Tejada is 10-for-21 during his five-game hitting streak after going 2-for-4 with a run scored on Tuesday.
- Wilmer Flores is also enjoying a modest hitting streak – he has hit in four straight and is hitting .353 during his streak. He has nine RBI in his last nine games.
- Juan Lagares has a four-game hitting streak of his own – he’s hitting .333/.333/.467 during that stretch after enduring an 11-for-78 stretch from May 5 through May 29.
- Lucas Duda has hit .320/.433/.693 in his last 21 games with 14 extra-base hits, 10 walks, 13 RBI and 16 runs scored.
- Daniel Murphy saw his 11-game hitting streak end on Tuesday with an 0-for-3 at the plate. However, he has reached base in 12 straight games and is hitting .422/.469/.556 with seven RBI during that span.
One thing which has watered the Mets offense down all year are the strikeouts, but they have escalated at an alarming rate recently. In their last 15 games, they’ve struck out 131 times (8.7 per game), and have struck out in 28 of their 72 plate appearances in their two games against the Padres just this week. They have struck out ten or more times in five of their last 11 games, and 12 or more in four of those five instances.
But, they appear to at long last be hitting collectively.
It’s worth mentioning Cuddyer, who got off to a pretty flat start over the first six weeks of the season, has generally risen to Terry Collins’ challenge in Chicago (15 games ago) to step up as the veteran leader he’s been billed to be in a big way. While he’s still chasing pitches and struggling at times with runners in scoring position, he has started to deliver some key hits and hit for some much-needed power from the right side.
However, with Wright remaining out indefinitely and still no certain timetable for d’Arnaud to return, he must continue the outstanding pace he’s on at the present time.
