With uncertainty mounting around David Wright’s immediate future, the Mets have been forced to create a make-shift lineup, potentially placing three infielders out of position on any given night.
And, that’s not expected to change in the near future.
Sandy Alderson told reporters in San Diego tonight there are no immediate plans to change the current infield alignment, meaning Ruben Tejada will remain at third base, Wilmer Flores at shortstop, and Daniel Murphy at second base.
Alderson suggested it was possible shifts could eventually take place, but they are concerned with the negativity that could be construed from changes, and constant shifts are not conducive to success.
and said some kind of change could be made when Dilson Herrera is activated from the disabled list, which could take place within a couple of weeks.
The club is considering alternatives from outside the organization, but such an alternative would not be an attempt to replace Wright at third base.
“We’re not looking for his replacement,” Alderson explained.
As Wright said earlier on Tuesday, Alderson said there is no timetable for the third baseman to return from the disabled list.
“I don’t expect him back in the next couple of weeks,” Alderson said. “It’s a period of uncertainty.”
One response to “Mets are exploring external options, but infield to remain as is, for now”
Ugh! This is gonna be horrible…especially for DW and family. But, perhaps, from the “God works in strange ways” department, David Wright will somehow remain
in the Mets organization in some other capacity, oh, say, MANAGER!? I know he will be sorely missed, but I do NOT think he will ever be back on the field at 3rd base. So sad. He loves GOLF, too. I wonder what it is they are clearly not telling us….yet.
