David Wright will leave Los Angeles and head for San Diego today to visit with the Mets as they play the middle game of their three-game series with the Padres tonight at Petco Park.
During his visit, Wright will meet with Terry Collins to discuss his recovery progress from spinal stenosis through his work with Dr. Robert Watkins and his physical therapy group.
What Terry Collins learns from his meeting with the team’s captain, will help determine how the club proceeds with their short and long-term defensive alignment among those currently on the roster.
We’ve got to wait to see where David’s at,” Collins explained. “Is it going to be 10 days, two weeks, two months? I don’t know.”
Collins said if Wright is out long-term, they could change their alignment. But for now, he’s comfortable with the alignment.
“If it’s going to be a lengthy period of time, we’ll certainly revisit what our best alignment is,” Collins said. “Right now, I don’t like moving guys around. I think they should come knowing where they’re playing.”
If Wright is out long-term, and the club decides not to make a trade, the most logical alignment would be to move Daniel Murphy to third base, and either Ruben Tejada to second base or shifting Wilmer Flores to second and moving Tejada to shortstop.
Ultimately, Tejada is best suited in a best role, and that’s where he could ultimately land once Dilson Herrera is activated from the disabled list.
The Mets could also consider acquiring someone via a trade, which might need to happen regardless of whether or not Wright comes back and how they decide to craft the infield.
