The Mets edged out the Marlins by the score of 4-3 today at Citi Field. Here are my takeaways from today’s win…
Bart is back.
It’s hard to argue with what Bartolo Colon gave the Mets today. He let Miami claw back thanks to an RBI ground out and a solo home run by Justin Bour, but he pitched well, threw quality strikes and commanded the corners with his two-seamer, something he has struggled to do really since the last time he faced Miami about a month ago.
He was also primary contributor to what has really become a predictably meager offense when he gave the Mets a 2-1 lead with a second inning double. Previously, his plate appearances were must-see TV because of what he couldn’t do at the plate in comical fashion, but he has really worked on his offense and the work has paid off at times this season.
A scratch and claw day for the offense.
The Mets got a gift run on an error by Justin Bour in the first (who made up for it later), an RBI double from Colon, a solo homer from Wilmer Flores, and that was that with the bats. Those three runs came in the first three innings, after which David Phelps pretty much silenced the bats after that.
But the Mets cracked Steve Cishek again, this time in the seventh inning after Juan Lagares singled and stole second, and after they passed on Curtis Granderson, Ruben Tejada broke the tie with an RBI double to plate Lagares and give the Mets the lead for good.
I know everyone has been down on Tejada, from the fans all the way up to the team’s brass. But he’s here, he’s playing well in foreign lands at third base, and he’s come up with some huge hits in the last few days. It’s exciting to see the kid start to produce and enjoy success here – it’s been a long time coming.
Salvaged.
This was not a good weekend for the Mets. This was a series they really needed to win yet it seems like they gave away of a series to a second division club this weekend. It was a successful home stand none the less – they won four out of six – but this weekend was disappointing.
Still, they’re going out west tonight riding a win, and hopefully some momentum as they head to a region they’ve historically struggled to win in. Here’s to the Mets righting their ship on the road out there…
Other notes from Sunday:
Jeurys Familia recorded his fourth five out save of his career.
Tejada went 5-for-12 with four RBI in the three-game series.
Colon won his eighth game of the year, tying him with Felix Hernandez for the Major League lead.
The Mets went 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position today – they went 6-for-29 with runners in scoring position in the three-game series.
One response to “Takeaways from the Mets 4-3 win against the Marlins on Sunday…”
An inordinate amount of early-in-the-season ‘scoreboard watching’ has zapped me of strength/Bartolo-the-Bambino strikes again, though & we win & Nats lose, Phillies lose and Braves are having a hard time with the Jints today out West, so we gain a game in the Standings…save me from this! JUST WIN, JUST METS!
