Here is the latest on the plans for the six-man rotation, from both Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen and Terry Collins:
- The six-man rotation will go into effect Tuesday in San Diego – the Mets will activate Dillon Gee from the disabled list, and he will start Tuesday night’s game.
- If it works, the six-man rotation will last into August, but if if it’s not working, the team could pull the plug on it sooner.
- The goal is to shed at least three starts off the ledger for each pitcher in the rotation and have them make no more than 30 starts a piece.
- The goal with a six-man rotation is to get all of the pitchers extra rest, specifically Matt Harvey, Jaob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard who are all pitching with some kind of innings limit this season.
- If the Mets need Harvey to pitch out of turn while using the six-man rotation, they will not hesitate to use in in certain situations.
- The Mets have considered every possible scenario to limit the innings and workloads of their young starting pitching – a six-man rotation eliminates the need to cut starts short and/or shut down pitchers to give them the rest.
- The team is concerned about Bartolo Colon’s workload at this stage of his career – limiting his workload could help his stamina over the course of the season.
- It’s necessary to spread them all out so each of them are fresh down the stretch of the season.
- One of the objectives is to ensure Syndergaard is pitching at this level. “We want this guy pitching here,” Collins explained to reporters over the weekend.
- It’s possible the club will have the starting pitchers throw live batting practice to keep them fresh with the extra time off.
- The Mets will likely option a bench player when Gee is activated from the disabled list and go short on the bench for a duration.
