The latest on the Mets plans for the six-man rotation

BaronThe Mets will activate Dillon Gee from the disabled list in time for next Tuesday’s game against the Padres in San Diego.

When that happens, Gee will be added to the rotation to form a six-man rotation.

Here is the latest on the plans for the rotation, from both Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen and Terry Collins:

  • The six-man rotation will last into August.
  • The goal is to shed at least three starts off the ledger for each pitcher in the rotation and have them make no more than 30 starts a piece.
  • The goal with a six-man rotation is to get all of the pitchers extra rest, specifically Matt Harvey, Jaob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard who are all pitching with some kind of innings limit this season.
  • In addition, the team is concerned about Bartolo Colon’s workload at this stage of his career – limiting his workload could help his stamina over the course of the season.
  • It’s necessary to spread them all out so each of them are fresh down the stretch of the season.
  • One of the objectives is to ensure Syndergaard is pitching at this level. “We want this guy pitching here,” Collins explained to reporters over the weekend.
  • It’s possible the club will have the starting pitchers throw live batting practice to keep them fresh with the extra time off.
  • The Mets will likely option a bench player when Gee is activated from the disabled list and go short on the bench for a duration.

Mets starters on five days rest:

Dillon Gee: 31 starts, 11-11, 3.76 ERA
Jon Niese: 59 starts, 22-20, 3.34 ERA
Matt Harvey: 12 starts, 5-4, 2.04 ERA
Jacob deGrom: 12 starts, 6-4, 2.77 ERA
Bartolo Colon: 146 starts, 11-11, 4.52 ERA

Mets starters on six days rest:

Dillon Gee: 21 starts, 10-6, 3.62 ERA
Jon Niese: 27 starts, 10-9, 3.99 ERA
Matt Harvey: 9 starts, 5-2, 1.07 ERA
Jacob deGrom: 4 starts, 1-3, 3.12 ERA
Bartolo Colon: 71 starts, 32-21, 3.69 ERA

Can’t say I’m in love with the idea, but the truth is that anything that limits Harvey, deGrom and Syndergaard’s time on the mound is something I wouldn’t be happy about. Still, the Mets have said all along that they intend to do that and this will accomplish that goal. I give them credit for that.

  2. apparently the majority of the mets pitchers seem to benefit from the additional day of rest, specifically Colon, and Harvey.
