On Monday, Terry Collins told reporters he has spoken with his entire pitching staff about the forthcoming six-man rotation, which will begin once Dillon Gee is activated from the disabled list in time for a start against the Padres in San Diego next Tuesday.

Here’s what he said about the six-man rotation:

  • The goal with a six-man rotation is to get all of the pitchers extra rest, specifically Matt Harvey, Jaob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard who are all pitching with some kind of innings limit this season.
  • It’s necessary to spread them all out so each of them are fresh down the stretch of the season.
  • One of the objectives is to ensure Syndergaard is pitching at this level. “We want this guy pitching here,” Collins explained to reporters.
  • It’s possible the club will have the starting pitchers throw live batting practice to keep them fresh with the extra time off.
  • The Mets will likely option a bench player when Gee is activated from the disabled list and go short on the bench for a duration.

  1. How about releasing ,unconditionally, Mayberry JR.? Addition by subtraction. I see no reason to logjam up the roster with his presence. Catching lightening in a bottle did not happen with him like it did with Marlon Byrd or even Gary Sheffield, who had better at the plate discipline.
