Dilson Herrera broke the top of his middle finger during pre-game drills at Citi Field on May 15.

He has departed for the team’s minor league complex in Port St. Lucie to continue working and stay in shape while his finger heals. He performing basic baseball activities such as fielding ground balls and running drills.

However, on Sunday Terry Collins said Herrera is not close to returning, as he cannot throw or swing a bat at this time, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.

If there are no setbacks, presumably Herrera will be out between four and six weeks, which puts his timetable between June 15 and July 1.

Its nice that he’s already rehabbing in Florida and staying in shape, but there’s nothing particularly complex from a baseball perspective he can do just yet.

In his absence, it seemed like a good opportunity to take a look at Matt Reynolds at either second or shortstop and leave Daniel Murphy at third base. That would have given them a stronger defense up the middle. Instead, they shifted Murphy back to second and have gone with a revolving door of Eric Campbell and Ruben Tejada at third for the time being.

In ten games for the Mets this season, Herrera is hitting .235/.297/.353 with a home run and three RBI in 37 plate appearances.
