Dillon Gee will make one more rehab start

The Mets have designs on a six-man rotation in the near-term, but those plans are on hold until the first week of June.

Dillon Gee will make another rehab start with Double-A Binghamton before he is activated from the disabled list. After that, he will likely be inserted into the starting rotation as the sixth starter.

That means the six-man rotation will commence in June.

It makes sense considering they have the off-day coming on Thursday. It’s hard to space the starting pitchers out with six days of rest a piece and expect them to be in a consistent rhythm.

As for Gee, he has pitched on Thursday for St. Lucie. He will pitch for Binghamton on Wednesday. If all goes well (and presumably, it will since he was likely ready to be activated), he could be inserted into the Mets rotation sometime during their west coast trip in early June, likely June 2 in San Diego.

Gee didn’t seem happy with his assignment to Binghamton for another rehab start on Sunday, saying he’s, “wasting bullets.”

“This has been the weirdest damn year in baseball I’ve ever had,” Gee told reporters on Sunday.

Indeed it has. He was assigned to the bullpen in camp, put back in the rotation in mid-March, and now they’re clearly jerking things around with him as they construct their six-man rotation. Between that and the trade rumors, I most definitely understand his frustration.

Gee has been on the 15-day disabled list with a strained groin muscle.
