Matt Harvey will start for the Mets this afternoon as the club looks to even their three-game series against the Pirates at PNC Park.
Harvey is making his second career start against the Pirates – he allowed two runs in seven innings in a no-decision against them back in 2013.
Here are some notes about Harvey ahead of today’s game:
- He currently has a 16 inning scoreless streak, dating back to his start against the Phillies on May 8.
- Harvey has thrown at least six shutout innings in four starts this season tied for the most in the big leagues with Tim Lincecum.
- He ranks ninth in baseball with his 1.98 ERA, sixth in the National League with a .213 batting average against and tied for fourth in the National League with 1.3 walks per nine innings.
- Harvey is the fifth pitcher in Mets history to not allow a run and record nine strikeouts in back-to-back games. Tom Seaver did it three times (twice in 1971 and once in 1975), Dwight Gooden did it twice (both in 1984), Sid Fernandez (1992) and R.A. Dickey (2012).
- Harvey could become the first pitcher in Mets history to allow no runs and with at least nine strikeouts three times in a season. He has done that in each of his last two starts.
- Harvey is one of only two starters in the last 100 years to allow one run or fewer in 23 of his first 44 career games. The other is Gooden.
