On Friday night, Noah Syndergaard allowed four runs – three earned – on seven hits with five strikeouts in six innings.
Syndergaard threw 67 of his 99 pitches for strikes but fell to 1-2 with a 3.63 ERA in three big league starts.
After Friday’s loss, Terry Collins said Syndergaard will remain in the rotation, and will pitch again next Wednesday against the Phillies at Citi Field.
“Right now, he’s not going anywhere,” Collins said. He will go back out there in five days, and we will see how he does.”
That’s the right call.
Syndergaard had an uneven start tonight and struggled a bit with his fastball command, but the stuff is big league caliber and the fact of the matter is he’s shown in his first two weeks here he belongs no where but in the big leagues. Sending him and that stuff back to Triple-A does nothing for the long-term health of the organization.
It’s not always going to be pretty early on, as was the case tonight. But he’s only going to get better, and should be afforded the necessary time at this level to do so.
Having said that, Terry Collins did not officially commit to a six-man rotation after Friday’s loss, although he did hint before the game that could be the direction the club is going in the short-term.
“I’m not saying anything officially,” Collins said about the plans with the rotation. “We will make a decision tomorrow.”
