Late Monday, the Mets announced they will be purchasing OF Darrell Ceciliani’s contract from Triple-A Las Vegas before Tuesday’s game against the Cardinals.
In what is really no surprise, the club designated OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis for assignment on Tuesday to make room for Ceciliani on both the 40-man and 25-man roster.
Nieuwenhuis went just 3-for-38 with 17 strikeouts in 40 plate appearances this season, and was 0-for-13 with eight strikeouts as a pinch hitter after going 8-for-28 as a pinch hitter in 2014.
If the Mets wish to retain the rights to Nieuwenhuis, he will have to clear waivers first. It wouldn’t be a surprise if he goes unclaimed considering his struggles this season and overall track record, nor would it be a surprise if the Mets make him a free agent if that is indeed the case.
Nieuwenhuis was the team’s third round pick in the 2008 first-year player draft. He hit .230/.302/.676 with 13 home runs and 60 RBI in 226 games over parts of three-plus seasons with the Mets.
