The Mets took the rubber game of their three-game series with the Brewers on Sunday afternoon, defeating Milwaukee by the score of 5-1 at Citi Field. Here are my takeaways from today’s win…
Happy #ThorsDay.
Noah Syndergaard was very impressive one again this afternoon, and got a well deserved first big league win. His curveball was lights out good all day, he had great command of his fastball, and he had great tempo through his six innings today.
He seemed to get rattled when he hit Carlos Gomez in the head with a pitch in the sixth inning (understandable), but he buckled down and got through the jam he pitched himself into.
In two starts so far this season, Syndergaard has shown he belongs here. There aren’t too many pitchers who come up here – in a vital role no less – and show the poise and ability to throw strikes like Syndergaard has. It’s something pretty unique and special, and very difficult for the Mets to send back to the minor leagues.
Mets set the tone immediately in this game.
Curtis Granderson hit a leadoff homer in the first inning, and the Mets never looked back. They tacked on one in the third and three in the fourth thanks to RBI singles from Eric Campbell and Michael Cuddyer, and Syndergaard and the bullpen took care of the rest for New York today.
It was nice to see the Mets have the same rhythm they had yesterday. They beat a team they’re supposed to beat this weekend, but after five straight losses and a lack of life around the club, it was important to have a couple of relaxing contests.
More great bullpen work.
Today, it was Sean Gilmartin, Carlos Torres, Hansel Robles and Jeurys Familia shutting down the opposition with just one hit. Despite the team’s struggles, the bullpen has not let up, remaining stingy and efficient for the entire season so far. It’s amazing because it’s been a piece meal effort down there, yet so many people who probably wouldn’t be here if not for the injuries have come in, and stepped it up big time in what has really been a chaotic situation.
Other notes from Sunday:
Both Campbell and Lucas Duda had two hits a piece with two RBI on the afternoon.
Michael Cuddyer drove in two runs and went 1-for-4 – he is 10-for-47 with three RBI and no extra-base hits this season.
The Mets went 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position in Sunday.
Granderson’s leadoff homer was his 30th career leadoff home run.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis pinch hit in the eighth inning – he is 3-for-37 this season.
