On Sunday afternoon, the Marlins announced they fired manager Mike Redmond.

“Hopefully a new voice will spark & motivate our guys to play as capable as we know they are of playing,” Marlins GM Mike Hill said after the announcement.

The Marlins are expected to announce their new manager at a press conference at Marlins Park tomorrow morning at 11:00 AM.

The Marlins were considering replacing Redmond last month after the Mets swept Miami at Citi Field, according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald. At the time, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria was considering Mets Triple-A manager Wally Backman as Redmond’s replacement.

However, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports and MLB Network later said Backman would not replace Redmond.

But now that Redmond has officially been fired, speculation has arisen Backman could emerge as a candidate. However, the Mets have not yet been contacted by Miami regarding Backman, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

One of these days, Backman will get an offer to manage at this level. As he continues to succeed in the minors, he only continues to solidify an already deserving resume. I wouldn’t expect the Mets would stand in the way of an interview if another club was interested, as there remains no indication the Mets would consider him here if they decide to move on from Terry Collins at some point.

It’s worth noting Backman still has not been given a spot on Collins’ bench either, which further indicates he’s not a serious consideration to manage the club.
