Mets are not planning to use a six-man rotation

Dillon Gee 1 slice

BaronDillon Gee pitched four innings in a rehab start on Saturday night for the St. Lucie Mets at Tradition Field, and Terry Collins said Gee will get one more start and throw 100 pitches before being activated.

On Sunday, Terry Collins said the team is not planning to use a six-man rotation when Gee returns.

Collins would not say whether or not Noah Syndergaard could be returned to the minor leagues, or whether or not Gee will go to the bullpen.

Unless Syndergaard pitches poorly over the next two starts, it’s hard to envision the Mets sending him back to Las Vegas. That could mean the Mets will eventually send Gee to the bullpen, assuming there are no further injuries to the other starters in the rotation.

The Mets could conceivably buy themselves some time, and have Gee make a spot start on Tuesday, May 26 against the Phillies, which would help space out and limit the innings for Syndergaard, Matt Harvey, and Jacob deGrom.

Collins said they’re thinking about a few scenarios for Gee’s return, but did not reveal what the team was thinking.
