The Mets crushed the Brewers 14-1 on Saturday night, evening up their three-game series at one a piece. Here are my takeaways from the win…
Well then…
Where has that been? The Mets absolutely crushed the Brewers tonight, beating them by a score of 14-1 and man, did they need that or what. They only had a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 4th inning (on an RBI single by Jacob deGrom) but boy, oh boy, did the floodgates open after that. In said 4th inning the Mets put 10 runs on the board–just the 4th time in franchise history they’ve scored double-digit runs in a single inning–highlighted by arguably the biggest hit of the game, a grand slam by Wilmer Flores, which was then followed by a 2-run double off the bat of Michael Cuddyer, a 2-run double by Daniel Murphy and an RBI single by Eric Campbell.
In year’s past when we’ve seen the Mets put up a crooked number in the box score, they’ve tended to go into sleep mode offensively for the rest of the game, which may have happened a bit (how can you blame them, they scored 10 runs in an inning), but not for long as they added three more in the 7th via home runs from Kevin Plawecki and Curtis Granderson.
To boot, Jacob deGrom went 3-for-3 at the plate (tied for the most hits in a game by a Mets pitcher) with an RBI. Have a day, Mets offense. Now let’s see some more of the same tomorrow.
Jacob deGrom wasn’t too shabby on the mound, either.
After a rough start in Chicago, deGrom put together a much needed good start tonight as he went six innings allowing a run on five hits and a walk while striking out six. It wasn’t a stellar night for deGrom, who’s still looking to round back into his Rookie of the Year form, but it was a positive step forward, especially after that last start. DeGrom getting things back together would help this team tremendously, as I suspect they’ll need to rely on him as the 2nd ace rather than Bartolo Colon as the season moves forward.
It was a good day on the mound for Jake, although he’d probably gloat that his offensive performance was even better.
Other notes from Saturday:
Jacob deGrom is the 2nd Mets pitcher to have two hits in one inning (Chris Young), per Elias.
Daniel Murphy collected his 200th career double in the 4th, becoming the 7th player in Mets history to reach that plateau.
Wilmer Flores’ grand slam in the 4th was his 6th home run of the season. Flores’ six home runs lead the Mets and are tied for the most among major league shortstops.
Eric Goeddel pitched two shutout innings on Saturday and has not allowed a run in 13 appearances this year opening 11.1 innings.
The Mets’ 14 runs tonight tied them for the most runs scored in a game at Citi Field (6/22/10 vs. Tigers).
The 14 runs and 16 hits tonight were both season highs from the Mets.
