With Dilson Herrera going on the disabled list today, the Mets will recall Eric Campbell to replace him on the roster.
After the Mets lost 7-0 to the Brewers on Friday, Terry Collins said Campbell will play third base full-time, and Daniel Murphy will return to second base.
That’s actually difficult to understand.
Sandy Alderson originally said they brought Herrera here to shore up the middle infield defense by moving Murphy out from second base. Yet, they’re reverting back to what they considered to be so problematic early in the season.
Murphy is a much better third baseman than he is second baseman. Terry Collins has said several times how good Murphy is at third base.
It just seems like a logical time to take a look at Matt Reynolds in this equation, and leave Murphy where he is strongest until David Wright becomes an option again. They could slot Reynolds right in at second base if they want to keep Flores at shortstop. Yes, he isn’t on the 40-man roster, they may want to see more from him, but this is a good time to do the latter.
Instead, they’re doing something they already know didn’t work in the middle of a five-game losing streak. Go figure.
One response to “Daniel Murphy will move back to second base”
Murphy is more vital to this team then people believe. Interesting to see what will happen in the weeks to come.
