The Mets have made a surprising move Tuesday afternoon, announcing C Johnny Monell is en route to New York.

The Mets have not announced a corresponding roster move – Monell is not on the 40-man roster.

Monell is hitting .397/.455/.638 in 66 plate appearances so far in 2015 with four home runs and 15 RBI in 17 games for Triple-A Las Vegas.

The Mets will carry three catchers for the next few days, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.

The question is, who will be jettisoned?

They could go with a short bullpen through the week with two off-days and just extend the bench. Monell has played some first base in his professional career, for what it’s worth as well.

Or, maybe they’re looking for a boost from the left side of the bench, which could mean they’ll option Eric Campbell, or Kirk Nieuwenhuis has reached the end of the line, but we will see…

The Mets don’t necessarily have to cut anyone from the 40-man roster right now to accommodate Monell, although they could activate Cesar Puello (if he’s ready) and then designate him for assignment to free up a spot. They could also move Jerry Blevins to the 60-day disabled list, retroactive to April 20, since he won’t be back until sometime after that date anyway.
