What to look for: Nationals vs. Mets, 1:10 PM

Citi Field HDR 1 slice

BaronThe Mets will look for a series split against the Nationals this afternoon at 1:10 PM at Citi Field.

Here is today’s starting lineup for New York:

Curtis Granderson – RF
Juan Lagares – CF
Lucas Duda – 1B
Michael Cuddyer – LF
Daniel Murphy – 3B
Kevin Plawecki – C
Ruben Tejada – SS
Dilson Herrera – 2B
Dillon Gee – RHP

Mets vs NationalsHere are three things I’m looking for today:

Another solid effort from Gee.

He has put together two strong starts in a row, as he’s worked very quickly and used all of his pitches in each of his last two games. He’s found a formula for success, and it’s necessary he sticks with that formula against a tough Washington lineup today. Terry Collins has once again positioned the strongest possible defense behind him, specifically up the middle, so he could use them to his advantage, especially if he gets runners on.

Offense needs to lift Doug Fister.

Despite some of the Mets having very good numbers against Fister, he has owned them in recent years. Fister is a ground ball specialist, so it’s important they find a way to elevate his pitches as much as possible this afternoon.

A series split.

The Mets will look to avoid losing their third series in a row after losing both on their last road trip. It becomes especially important given its the Nationals and a divisional opponent, and to not give them two games in the standings over this long weekend series. To do that, they’ll need to play crisp and sharp behind Gee and find a way to scratch a run across against a Met killer in Fister. They’re a better team than the one Fister has faced in the past, so it will be interesting to see how they work him and try to scratch runs across against him.
