Wilmer Flores is not in Saturday night’s lineup against the Nationals.

Before the game, Terry Collins said this was a scheduled day off for Flores, noting it was important to give him both a physical and a mental break given some of his recent struggles in the field.

Collins also said it’s possible Flores will have Sunday’s series finale against the Nationals off as well, giving him three full days off ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Orioles.

Flores knew he would have Saturday’s game off before Friday night’s game, Terry Collins explained. But, he also has been told it is not due to his struggles defensively early in the season.

Both Collins and Sandy Alderson have said over the last few days they will be sticking with Flores at shortstop for the foreseeable future.

Flores is hitting  .240/.278/.387 with three home runs and eight RBI in 22 games this season. He has committed seven errors at shortstop already this season.
