In an effort to bolster the quality of the team’s defense up the middle, the Mets decided to recall Dilson Herrera to pair with Wilmer Flores at shortstop late on Thursday night.
For the time being, Daniel Murphy will play third base while David Wright continues to work his way back to the Mets, and Eric Campbell will be relegated to bench duties.
However, when Wright does return, Terry Collins said on Friday afternoon Murphy will be returned to second base on a full-time basis.
The question is, will the Mets re-pair Murphy with Flores, considering the whole point of bringing Herrera here to play second is to make the defense better?
Collins did not say what the plan would be beyond Murphy returning to second base, but Collins and Sandy Alderson said on Friday the Mets will remain patient with Flores at shortstop for the time being.
As for Wright, he is still at least a week away from returning – Collins said Wright is undergoing physical therapy today in Port St. Lucie and will resume running tomorrow.
Alderson said on Thursday the hope is Wright will be able to play in some rehab games sometime next week, but on Friday said his return by next Friday would be, “aggressive,” which was partially the motivation to bring Herrera up for Friday’s game.
Wright has been on the disabled list with a strained hamstring since April 15.
One response to “Daniel Murphy will return to second base when David Wright is activated”
If they re-pair Murphy and Flores, then this whole move now makes *zero* sense.
This leads me to believe that no matter what they say, either Murphy or Flores will be out in a week when Wright comes back.
