Yesterday, Rafael Montero was dispatched to New York to visit with team physicians at the Hospital for Special Surgery after reporting discomfort following his start on Tuesday against the Marlins.
This afternoon, Terry Collins said Montero will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with right rotator cuff inflammation, although it’s not considered a serious injury, Sandy Alderson said at Citi Field on Thursday.
Collins did not offer a specific timetable for Montero’s return. Should the Mets need a sixth starter again, it’s not clear if Montero would be available to make such a start.
Montero was optioned to the minor leagues following his start on Tuesday – that option will be rescinded and he will be placed on the Major League disabled list. He will accrue Major League service time while on the disabled list.
For possible alternatives to Montero as the sixth/spot starter, check out this post from Wednesday.
