The Mets are off next Monday, have a two-game series against the Orioles next Tuesday and Wednesday, and are off once again next Thursday.
As such, Terry Collins said this afternoon the Mets will skip over one or two starters and go with a shorter rotation the next time through.
The Mets could reshuffle the deck while keeping both Jacob deGrom and Matt Harvey on regular rest next week by throwing them against Baltimore and skipping Bartolo Colon on Monday. This would also afford both Harvey and deGrom an extra day of rest the next through a regular turn in the rotation with the off-day next Thursday.
They could then go with Colon on May 8, Jon Niese on May 9, and Dillon Gee on May 10, which would give Niese and Gee five full days of rest. It’s not clear whether or not they’d do that since skipping Colon could push his next start after tomorrow back to ten days.
Then again, there’s the draw factor at Citi Field with deGrom and Harvey next week plus Baltimore is expected to be a tough opponent this year. The Mets have set this rotation up in April to be as competitive as possible early in specific matchups, and it’s worked, so why not continue to do that and take advantage of situations?
It will be interesting to see what they ultimately do…

Sure hope the violence in Baltimore is abated and peace returns to a great little city.
Not just because the Mets are headed there, of course, but will the Commissioner allow those games to resume in the normal way, I.e. with fans in attendance in Camden Yard?
