As expected, the Mets sent Rafael Montero back to Las Vegas following his outing on Tuesday night.
The Mets will continue to go short on the bench, recalling LHP Jack Leathersich from Triple-A Las Vegas.
Leathersich has pitched well for Triple-A Las Vegas, allowing only two runs on 13 strikeouts in only seven innings of work.
But perhaps most important, Leathersich has only issued two walks in those seven innings.
It will be interesting to see how Leathersich does here. He is not a natural lefty specialist and has struggled to throw strikes throughout his professional career. But, he seems to have found something early this season at Triple-A, and he’s being rewarded for his success with a chance to perform in the big leagues.
There’s a notion the strikeout rate will decline as he begins to throw more strikes, as the contact rate could conceivably go up. So far, that hasn’t happened at Triple-A, but it will be interesting to see if he can come here and rack up the strikeouts like he has throughout his professional career.
The Mets will continue to go short on the bench for the time being since they decided to recall Leathersich. Presumably they will shorten up in the bullpen again once David Wright is ready to return from the disabled list…
