Anthony Recker will start and bat eighth for the Mets on Tuesday night against the Marlins.
This afternoon, Terry Collins told reporters he decided to start Recker instead of Kevin Plawecki because he believes Recker will force Montero to use all of his pitches, and not allow him to become strictly a fastball pitcher, according to Newsday’s Marc Carig.
It’s not a bad idea to start the veteran who knows the Marlins well and may understand their tendencies a little better than the rookie Plawecki.
Clearly, Collins is still concerned with Montero’s approach after he threw 35 straight fastballs against Atlanta 2 1/2 weeks ago, and having a strong and established personality behind the plate could help Montero get through this start more effectively.
