Today’s pitching preview: Jacob deGrom vs. Michael Pineda

Jacob deGrom 1 slice

The Mets opening up a three-game series in the Bronx against the Yankees on Friday night. Here are tonight’s pitching matchups…

Rich MacLeodJacob deGrom (2-1, 0.93 ERA) will start for the Mets. DeGrom has been flat-out incredible in this young season. After allowing a 2-run home run to Ryan Zimmerman of the 1st inning of his first start of the season, no one’s been able to do anything against the reigning National League Rookie of the Year. DeGrom has pitched 18.1 scoreless innings since that point, the longest active streak in the major leagues. Last season, deGrom made his major league debut in the Subway Series at Citi Field, allowing a run on four hits and two walks while striking out six in 7 IP.

Key matchups vs deGrom:

Jacoby Ellsbury: 1-for-3, 2B
Mark Teixeira: 1-for-2, BB, 1 K
Brett Gardner: 0-for-2, BB, 1 K.

Michael Pineda (2-0, 5.00 ERA) will start for the Yankees. While his ERA may not reflect it, Pineda’s been good for the Yankees this season. In three starts and 18 innings pitched, Pineda has allowed two run home runs and two walks while striking out 20. More likely than not, Pineda isn’t going to allow many baserunners tonight, as his 20:2 strikeout-to-walk ratio suggests. Tonight will mark Pineda’s first career start vs. the Mets.

Key matchups vs. Pineda:

Michael Cuddyer: 1-for-5
Curtis Granderson: 0-for-1, 2 BB
