Last week, the Mets optioned RHP Rafael Montero to Triple-A Las Vegas with designs on stretching him out as a starter.
The Mets have said Montero will slot into the rotation as a sixth man on APril 28 in Miami in order to give Matt Harvey and others an extra day off during their current stretch of 13 consecutive games.
On Thursday night in Reno, Montero made one final tune-up start, going five innings and allowing four runs and six hits with four strikeouts.
Montero did not walk a batter and threw 48 of his 74 pitches for strikes.
The Mets have not said what they’ll do with Montero after his start on Tuesday, although they’ve said they will not continue on with a six-man rotation beyond this one turn through the rotation. So, it seems pretty clear its going to come down to Montero or Dillon Gee.
Gee pitched well in his last start on Wednesday – he allowed only two runs in seven innings against the Braves. He will get one more start before the Mets make a decision on who will remain in the rotation.
