As the Marlins were leaving New York on Sunday evening, rumors began to swirl their manager, Mike Redmond, was under fire for his team’s poor start.

According to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria was considering replacing Redmond, and one of the people he was reportedly interested in was Mets Triple-A manager Wally Backman.

In fact, while Loria was at Citi Field over the weekend, he was inquiring about Backman and his qualifications to potentially manage his Marlins if he were to fire Redmond, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.

However, if the Marlins do decide to fire Redmond, Backman will ultimately not replacement at the helm, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

One of these days, Backman will get an offer to manage at this level. As he continues to succeed in the minors, he only continues to solidify an already deserving resume. I wouldn’t expect the Mets would stand in the way of an interview if another club was interested, as there remains no indication the Mets would consider him here if they decide to move on from Terry Collins at some point.

It’s worth noting Backman still has not been given a spot on Collins’ bench either, which further indicates he’s not a serious consideration to manage the club.
