Things have been going well for the Mets lately, as they’ve won nine straight games and are 11-3 on the season, but it hasn’t just been going well for this franchise at the major league level.
Down on the farm, things have been encouraging as well, specifically when it comes to second base prospect Dilson Herrera.
Herrera, 21, is absolutely scorching at the plate right now. Not only did Herrera blast his first home run earlier in the week, but after last night’s game, he now has seven consecutive multi-hit games.
The numbers speak for themselves–Herrera is now hitting .392 in Triple-A with a .418 on-base percentage, a home run, four doubles, seven RBI and two stolen bases in 12 games.
While he hit .220 during his cup of coffee last year, he showed flashes of what he can do even at the age of 20, hitting three home runs with a triple and 11 RBI. He seemed a bit raw, so it wasn’t unexpected he would begin the year in the minor leagues.
Herrera is having a strong start to his campaign, but the fact is that Daniel Murphy is the second baseman of this team in 2015, and that’s not going to change as long as he’s healthy and on this team. It’s in 2016 and beyond, however, that Herrera comes into play. Murphy is due to become a free agent this offseason, and it appears unlikely that he’ll be back next season as there have been no reports of a potential contract extension.
So, even though I don’t expect to see much of Herrera this season, but it’s a good bet his time is coming beginning in 2016.
It’s incredible to think the Mets got Herrera–and Vic Black for that matter–for slightly over a month of Marlon Byrd and John Buck. There are many people around baseball who expect Herrera to be a star in New York, and I believe that day is coming. But until then, viva Las Vegas.

An absolutely savvy trade!
