Marlins have not asked Mets for permission to speak to Wally Backman

Wally Backman 1 slice

On Sunday night, rumblings surfaced out of Miami that Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria could seek to replace Mike Redmond as manager of his club, according to the Miami Herald.

BaronOne name which was mentioned as a possible replacement was Mets Triple-A manager Wally Backman.

But according to Marc Carig of Newsday, the Mets have not yet been contacted by the Marlins for permission to interview Backman.

Of course, Miami has yet to fire Mike Redmond, who is off to a 3-10 start with the Marlins in 2015.

He’s probably earned the opportunity to manage at the big league level, and if he’s offered a job, be it in Miami or elsewhere, he should take it, as sad as that might be for the Mets.

There remains no indication the Mets would consider him here if they decide to move on from Terry Collins at some point, and he still has not been given a spot on Terry Collins’ bench either, which further indicates he’s not a serious consideration to manage the club.

Both Terry Collins and Wally Backman have said they have excellent relationships with one another, and Collins really values Backman’s opinions on subjects such as who should be called up, and so on. That relationship and good communication line might be difficult to replace if Backman were to go.

But, life goes on, and if the Mets don’t see him fitting in at the big league level, he shouldn’t be handicapped going outside the organization.

  1. If it were to go down, I hope Wally thinks long and hard about it – because yes, it’s a major league job, but it’s a major league job for the Marlins working for Jeffrey Loria. I don’t care what anyone says – those are two major red flags – that team is a controversial pit. The only reason it is never a bigger story is because no one cares about the Marlins in South Florida.

  2. Good, and if they do ask, I hope Sandy says “NO”!
