Despite the 10-3 start to the 2015 season, the Mets have been hit by a barrage of injuries.
Zack Wheeler, Vic Black, Josh Edgin, David Wright, Jenrry Mejia, Jerry Blevins, Travis d’Arnaud. And, it’s only April 20. There are 149 games left in the regular season.
Despite having to reshape the battery, reshape the bullpen again, and fly in reinforcements from Las Vegas for the infield, the Mets do not plan to explore the external markets to replace these key assets.
“We’re comfortable with what we have,” Sandy Alderson explained on Sunday. “You’re never happy with an injury but we’re fortunate we have somebody of [Kevin Plawecki’s] caliber in the system. You’re not going to find somebody like that on the market. And we also feel we’ve still got plenty of arms that can come in and help us.”
The Mets called up Hansel Robles to replace Blevins. They still have Rafael Montero working as a starter. There’s Zack Thornton who has emerged as an option, and Jack Leathersich could eventually get here as a quality left-handed reliever for the bullpen. As Alderson said, there is quality depth at his immediate disposal.
And eventually, the Mets will get Blevins and d’Arnaud back, although their timeframes remain uncertain.
