What was feared on Sunday afternoon was confirmed on Monday afternoon regarding their key left-handed reliever.
Jerry Blevins was seen by doctors at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York on Monday, and he was officially diagnosed with a distal radius fracture in his left arm.
Blevins will be in a splint for six weeks, and if the fracture is healed, he can resume baseball activities at that time.
Based on that timetable, Blevins is probably at least two months away from returning to the Mets. Assuming all goes well, he has to begin building strength in his arm again and build his pitches up through a rehab assignment before getting back to the Mets. That’s pretty much what was anticipated, so while it’s all very unfortunate, it’s not a surprise after yesterday’s incident.
The good news is, Blevins does not require surgery – he just needs to rest and heal.
Blevins will officially be placed on the 15-day disabled list before tomorrow’s game against the Braves.
