Could Wally Backman replace Mike Redmond in Miami?

Wally Backman 1 slice

Michael BaronIt’s no secret Wally Backman wants to manage in the big leagues, but it just doesn’t seem like that possibility will exist for him with the Mets in the short-term.

But with the Marlins are off to a 3-10 start to their season, and their manager, Mike Redmond, could be on the hot seat. If that’s the case, a candidate to replace Redmond could be Backman, according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald.

Spencer said people in the Marlins’ organization are unhappy with the quality of play the Marlins have displayed, and losing their upcoming series to the Phillies could carry, “major ramifications.”

I wouldn’t blame him for entertaining other possibilities should they arise to him – he’s earned a big league managerial job. But it would be a sad day for the Mets organization if he were to leave. Every player who I’ve spoken to who has played for Wally reveres him as a motivator and strategist, and someone who commands respect and the hardest play.

  1. If the mets let Wally go to manage the Marlins the met fans would be pissed and considering Terry’s not signed past this year and the mets don’t seem interested
in extending his contract at least not until they see if Terry can keep the mets
winning for the whole year and not just getting off to a good start it would seem
to me that even though the mets are winning right now Sandy and the Pon’s
should seriously consider a change! Can you Imagine if the Marlins hire Wally
and they start winning and the mets decide not to extend Terry’s contract, OMG
their would be riots in the street and mobs that want to hang Fred, Saul, and Jeff
not to mention Sandy!! What a night mare, Fire Terry and hire Wally, the fans and
the media will go crazy and will support the move!! Even if Sandy was going to
extend Terry’s contract later this year Wally is the man to guide the mets to the
world series not Terry! Who would you rather have at the helm of the mets for
the next five years Terry or Wally?
