Sandy Alderson hopes there’s no spot available when Jenrry Mejia returns

Michael BaronJenrry Mejia will be eligible to return from his PED suspension on July 6 in San Francisco. However, Sandy Alderson hopes there is no spot available for him in the bullpen upon returning, reports SNY’s Steve Gelbs.

Alderson explained to Gelbs part of that hope is based on anger and disappointment between the front office and players on the club. But another part of it is he hopes those in the bullpen at that time are healthy and performing, leaving no justification to make room for Mejia when he’s eligible to return.

However, if there is no place for Mejia, maneuvering him may be difficult. He is out of options, meaning he would have to clear waivers in order to be sent to the minors.

In any event, it’s difficult to simply reinstate Mejia back into a prominent role in the bullpen, whether there’s room for him or not and whether players would welcome him back or not.

If the team makes the playoffs, and Mejia is playing prominent role down the stretch of the regular season, the Mets would have to reshuffle the deck down there because he cannot participate in the postseason as part of the rules for his PED violation.

Whatever happens with Mejia in July, the thought process is representative of a clear opinion of Mejia, which is not a good one.

One response to “Sandy Alderson hopes there’s no spot available when Jenrry Mejia returns”

  1. Not that any team would trade for a suspended PED user but my question is can a player be traded while he is serving a suspension?
I guess I’m thinking he could be a nice throw in player in a trade to move gee
