Game notes: Colon’s wins, efficiency and age-related accomplishments

Bartolo Colon 1 slice

Michael BaronBartolo Colon will start tonight’s game for the Mets against the Marlins at Citi Field. He earned his second win of the season last Sunday in Atlanta, going seven innings and allowing three runs on six hits.

Here are some notes on Colon as he goes for his third win of the season tonight:

  • Colon has won three starts in a row dating back to his final start of the 2014 season. The last time he won four straight starts was in his final four starts as a member of the Athletics (September 8-27, 2013).
  • Colon needed just 77 pitches to get through seven innings last Sunday in Atlanta. It was the 13th such outing in which a Mets starter needed 77 or fewer pitches to throw seven innings, and the first since Dillon Gee on April 16, 2014.
  • He ranks third among active pitchers in wins (206), trailing Tim Hudson (214) and CC Sabathia (208). His 206 wins are first among Dominican-born pitchers.
  • According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Colon is the first starting pitcher age 40 or older to record two wins in his team’s first week of a season since Roger Clemens at age-40 did so for the Yankees in 2003.
  • Colon has 12 wins since turning 41 on May 24, 2014. Only five Mets players have recorded two or more wins while being over 41 years old: Tom Glavine (13, 2007), Orlando Hernandez (nine, 2007), Warren Spahn (four, 1965) and John Franco (three, 2001).
