Daniel Muno on his way to New York

Daniel Muno 1 slice

M BaronDaniel Muno could soon be making his Major a league debut with the Mets.

Muno has been pulled from his game with Triple-A Las Vegas and is on his way to New York, the team announced on Thursday night.

The Mets have not announced a corresponding move, but they have also not said whether or not a current player is injured not he active roster.

It could be the Mets are trimming a member of their eight-man bullpen. The starters have been stretched out to the point where they are approaching 100 pitches, thus reducing the need for the extra man in the bullpen.

Logic would suggest Erik Goeddel or Rafael Montero would be optioned, especially Montero considering he has struggled in the bullpen to this point. Both Sean Gilmartin and Buddy Carlyle have pitched well enough to at least deserve to stay, and their statuses make it difficult to maneuver with them anyway.

Muno gives the Mets a switch hitter with a little power and a lot of speed off the bench. He has a good eye and great plate discipline, and has a propensity to get on-base. He adds to the versatility the Mets are going to need with David Wright being out for a while.

Muno is the first player drafted by Sandy Alderson’s front office to make the big leagues with the Mets – he not currently on the 40-man roster.

Muno hit .259 with 13 doubles, 14 home runs and 62 RBI in 117 games for Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League last year.

He batted .327 with one double, one triple, one home run and five RBI in 27 spring training games.

  2. […] According to Michael Baron of MLB.com, the New York Mets are calling up infield prospect Daniel Muno. According to Marc Carig of Newsday, the Mets will have to cut one of their relievers in the bullpen, in a corresponding move. Muno will join the Mets in New York in time for Friday’s game. […]

  3. I wonder if they keep Montero, and send down Alex Torres. Torres has stunk for the better pat of a couple of seasons. With 3 lefties in the bullpen one of them is definitely expendable. Montero has a bigger upside being that he is a young guy anyway. Montero has more K’s and a better ERA anyway.
