Terry Collins spoke with reporters about David Wright’s hamstring injury on Wednesday afternoon, and said the MRI results on Wright’s hamstring came back better than expected.
Collins said the hope is by the end of their current homestand next Thursday, the club has a better idea of when he might return.
While not definite, Collins said for now, the team is expecting Wright will only have to miss 15 days, meaning he could be eligible to return on April 29 against the Marlins in Miami.
Afterwards, Sandy Alderson said while he is hopeful Wright’s absence is limited to two weeks, it’s more realistic to expect his absence to be at least three weeks.
In Wright’s absence, Collins said Eric Campbell will get the bulk of the work at third base. He is reluctant to move either Daniel Murphy or Wilmer Flores to third since Wright’s injury is being considered short term – they do not want to alter their comfort levels at their positions.
In Flores’ case particularly, this should come as no surprise. The Mets consider him the shortstop for now, and he needs to keep going out there and playing on a regular basis to continue to get the necessary reps there. It’s also important continued confidence is shown in his abilities there.
As for the lineup configuration during Wright’s absence, Collins said he intends to keep Curtis Granderson in the leadoff spot until Granderson stops getting on-base and someone else shows an ability to get on-base more.
Granderson has a .406 on-base percentage despite hitting only .136 through the first eight games of the year.
