LHP Jon Niese gets set to make his second start of the year tonight against the Phillies. Niese struggled in his last start against the Braves, allowing three runs – one earned – in five innings in Atlanta.
Here are some notes on Niese as he and the Mets go for a series sweep of the Phillies:
- Niese has allowed three earned runs or less in 31 of his last 34 starts dating back to September 13, 2013.
- Allowed three earned runs or less in 27 of his 30 starts last season, tied for the third-most in the NL and three behind leader Johnny Cueto.
- Niese has allowed two earned runs or less in each of his last five starts – he has a 1.72 ERA and 25 strikeouts with only four walks during that span.
- Niese has walked three batters or less in each of his last 21 starts, dating back to June 1, 2014. He has a 3.66 ERA with only 26 walks allowed over 130 1/3 innings during that span.
- Niese has not lost to the Phillies since April 28, 2013.
