David Wright pulls right hamstring, return uncertain

M BaronThe Mets have lost two position players in one game tonight and  their entire bench in the process.

And, this one really hurts.

David Wright was forced to leave in the bottom of the eighth inning after pulling his right hamstring sliding into second base on a stolen base attempt.

Freddy Galvis, David WrightAnthony Recker pinch ran for Wright at second base. He replaced Wright at third base in the ninth inning.

Wright will undergo an MRI at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York on Wednesday morning. In the meantime, Eric Campbell has been summoned from Triple-A Las Vegas and will be at Citi Field on Wednesday.

When Wright initially injured his leg on the slide, he believed he could get it stretched out and continue to play.

“Anytime you feel something like that, you hope that it goes away. And this just didn’t go away,” Wright said.

Wright seemed encouraged this injury might not be as severe as the one he sustained two years ago, but suggested he will likely need time on the disabled list.

“The last thing I want to do is go out there and do what I did a couple of years ago, where I feel something, you don’t say anything, you try to play through it and you end up missing a significant amount of time rather than something that’s relatively shorter,” Wright explained on Tuesday night.

Tuesday night’s game was most unusual in that they lost two players to injury and almost lost a third in Wilmer Flores when he was hit on the hand by a pitch. Having said that, the Mets still were forced to use everyone on their short bench and inject Recker – the backup catcher – into the game in an unfamiliar role.

There’s only so much longer the Mets can go with the short bench. It’s been said on a couple of occasions: the short bench leaves Terry Collins hamstrung late in games, and doesn’t leave any margin for error or injury, such as what happened on Tuesday.

Eight games in, the Mets were victimized by the strategy, but it remains to be seen how much longer the Mets continue with this roster configuration.
