The Mets bullpen has been in a constant state of flux ever for about a month. What was considered a certain strength heading into camp has been clouded with questions and uncertainty lately, especially with the loss of Jenrry Mejia for the next 78 games.
Despite the adversity, the bullpen is off to a good start over the first six games of the season, posting a 2.81 ERA with only four walks in 16 innings, holding the opposition to a .140 batting average.
As for Mejia, Sandy Alderson told reporters at Citi Field this morning he is very unhappy and disappointed with his suspended closer.
“He’s paying a price,” Alderson said of Mejia, according to Mike Vorkunov of the Star Ledger. “We’re paying a price.”
Still, Alderson has faith in his current bullpen despite the question marks they face with Mejia and Josh Edgin lost.
“I think we’ve got depth. It’s not totally proven,” Alderson said, according to Vorkunov.
The Mets can expect reinforcements at some point in the near future. Alderson said both Vic Black and Bobby Parnell will begin minor league rehabilitation assignments in Port St. Lucie in the next day or two.
