The whirlwind in the Mets bullpen continued to swirl on Saturday, when Major League Baseball announced RHP Jenrry Mejia was suspended for 80 games for using stanozolol, a violation Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
Despite the loss of Mejia, the Mets do not intend to pursue the external markets for a replacement, according to Andy Martino of the Daily News.
Martino says the Mets are still happy with the depth they have in the bullpen.
The current right-handed relievers on the active roster are as follows:
Carlos Torres, Erik Goeddel, Rafael Montero, Jeurys Familia, and Buddy Carlyle.
In addition, Vic Black (shoulder soreness/weakness) and Bobby Parnell (recovering from Tommy John Surgery) are expected back sometime this month.
Certainly down the line, if Familia struggles and Parnell doesn’t find his form, it’s plausible to think the Mets could eventually explore the trade market for help on the right side of the bullpen. But other than possibly Rafael Soriano – who is still a free agent – there aren’t many meaningful acquisitions the Mets can make at the moment. Fortunately, while there are question marks the Mets are still deep with options on the right side at the moment.
But, time will tell how this all plays out.
